Part 1: Knowledge / Skill Instruction

Focus Instruction:

  • Diagraphs and Blends

Present Information:

  • I wrote out cards with words like small, clunk, chunk, skunk, frog, freeze, ect. I then cut them apart. Ex: frog à fr-og
  • Abigail will need to connect the cards into words and then form her own sentence using the word.

Unassisted Performance:

After explaining this activity to Abigail, she will need to put the cards together on her own. I may help a bit on forming sentences but I want her to do it on her own.

Part 2: Guided Reading                        Book Title The Classroom Caterpillars    Level 13

Before Reading:

  • Ask Abigail what all she knows about caterpillars and if she has ever kept on as a pet.
  • On page 14 the word chrysalis is used, I will explain this word to her.
    • The hard-shelled, outside of the caterpillar when its beginning to turn into a butterfly (a cocoon).

During Reading:

  • Listen and take notes.
  • Have Abigail read independently.
  • Tell Abigail to think about the questions I am going to ask her at the end of the story. They are shown below in after reading.

After Reading:

  • Who brought the caterpillar to the classroom?
    • Katie

  • Do caterpillars eat pumpkin?
    • Yes
  • Who is the main character in the story?
    • Katie
  • How does Katie solve the problem when she runs out of leaves for the caterpillars?
    • She tells her teacher and her teacher tells her to bring pumpkin.
  • Do you remember what a chrysalis is?
    • A cocoon.

Part 3: Extension and Practice:

  • Rereading old book: book title Candy, the old car            level 13

  • Read aloud to student: Book title Clifford’s Halloween

  • Word study

Part 1: Knowledge / Skill Instruction

Focus Instruction:

Blends Practice

Present Information:

Activity: Beginning Blends Puzzle Cards

  • Cards have to parts; one half has the two-letter beginning and the other card contains the rest of the word.
  • I will have Abigail connect the cards then read the card and the sentences that go along with the card.
  • The purpose of this activity is for Abigail to learn her blends.

Unassisted Performance:

After explaining the card game to Abigail I will run a quick practice child then let her loose to begin forming words.

Part 2: Guided Reading                        Book Title Candy, the old car            Level 13

Before Reading:

  • Run through the book on a picture walk.
  • Identify: On page 9 there are the sounds, ch.. ch.. ch..
    • Abigail has trouble with sounds by themselves so I will go to this page for her to better understand during the reading.

During Reading:

  • Let Abigail read independently, she seems to be on the verge of going up a level.
  • Listen and take notes on any problems she is having.

After Reading:

 Ask questions about the reading

  • Who are the two main characters?
    • Candy the old car and the red racing car
    • How do you think the red racing car felt when Candy won the race?
    • Can you tell me the story without looking back at the book?
    • What was your favorite part of the story?
      • My favorite part of the story was when Candy told the red racing car, “We will see.” This is my favorite part because I like that Candy was sure of himself and was not boastful. (explain what boastful means)

Part 3: Extension and Practice:

  • Ask if she would like to do the Beginning Blends cards another time.
  • If she does not want to practice with the cards, we will begin writing our own Halloween story.
    • I plan to write a part then have Abigail write a part.
    • This will help her to be more creative and will be a fun extra exercise throughout October.
